How do I get rid of impossible goals?

6 ways to get rid of impossible goals
1. Recognise the Goal-itis Syndrome:
Successfully overcome the goal-itis syndrome by recognising how it feels and what is its cause. Goals can seem real and important, and often are. However, they may be disproportionate to the quality and difficulty of the task. Always judge your goals against the business reality in place before you begin. You don’t have to eliminate all goal-itis. You may need a change of attitude and the right circumstances to get rid of it. Also, be aware that one change in your attitude may not overcome the whole problem.

2. Define the Goal-itis Syndrome and Ask the Right Questions:
Define the goal-itis syndrome in the context of your business and with an objective of its solution. Answer all the questions like;
• Am I in need of a restructuring?
• Are there people who can take over my job?
• Are there people who can take over my job and the capacity to implement the change?
• Is there a will to tackle the task?
If there is no will to do the job, you may have to wait until the need for the change recedes. Or, you may have to sell your business to achieve the goal.

3. Identify the Reasons Behind the Goal-itis Syndrome:
The root cause of the goal-itis syndrome can be found by understanding how the obstacles have crept in and what the important reasons are. If you aren’t knowledgeable enough on this, seek advice from someone with extensive knowledge and experience in the field.
You can also ask the right questions such as;
• Is the pressure of owning and managing the business getting to you?
• Are you seeing the staff or the business being affected because of the stress caused?
• Is there an absence of support from other members of staff?
• Is it difficult to find time to do all the required tasks that have to be done?

4. Ask Yourself the Right Questions:
Most of the time, people ask themselves questions about why they are doing a task that they aren’t interested in. These questions are often asked because you may have failed to answer the other important questions that can lead you to identify the causes for the goal-itis syndrome. Often, the answers you give to the right questions are the answers you need. Your answers will point you in the direction of the steps you need to take. Take some time and look for the cause of the problem.

5. Get Help:
If you are not equipped to deal with the situation, seek advice from someone who is experienced in the field. There are many consultants or coaches that you can find, willing to work on your problem.

6. Identify and Cut the Goal-itis:
Once you have the answers to the above questions, identify and fix the important obstacles by asking the right questions. Even if you do not achieve the objective, you will get a greater return than if you had followed the dream blindly.
