How to Deal with Body-Shaming

Body-shaming is a common practise today. Body shame can affect both men and women. This type of bullying can affect both thin and overweight people.

Body shaming can occur even if a person only has scars or stretch marks. It may be due to a person’s height, skin tone, clothing choices, or, regrettably, even a disability.

Others’ disparaging remarks about your appearance may also cause you to self-shame. Nobody should be treated unfairly because of how they look. So what do you need to do? How should you respond to body shaming?

You cannot live according to social expectations, live on your own terms, and be in love with yourself. Because you are deserving, you should learn how to feel good about yourself. Here are some helpful ideas for handling body-shaming:

1. Realise the Value of Body Positivity
Body positivity is the first action you should take to combat body shame. Being body positive involves recognising and realising how crucial it is for your mental health to feel good about your physical appearance

You should embrace your unique shape and skin tone. Be appreciative of your health. Focus on what you do have rather than what you don’t.

2. Admit Who You Are and Stop Hiding
Sad to learn that many who face body-shaming withdraw from society. It may manifest as a desire to be “invisible,” cover up their bodies, or isolate oneself from others.

This is not necessarily the case. Life is too brief to spend it hiding in the dark. If you constantly worry about what others might think of your appearance, how can you ever enjoy life? Don’t let this affect your thinking. Begin to accept and love your body. Quit hiding!

3. Take Responsibility and Be Accountable
Yes, you must love your physique and always be proud of it. However, you must also be willing to consider the idea that your body may be malfunctioning. Finding balance is key. Even though some people’s opinions are shared with the best of intentions and no malice, they sometimes come out as cruel.

You may be body-shaming other individuals without even being aware of it or using the appropriate language. Be extra sensitive to others and be sure to use the proper language. Because body-shaming can leave victims traumatised and with low self-esteem, we all need to avoid doing it.
