5 ways to motivate yourself
1. Visualize yourself reaching your goal: This can be anything, from a high-profile meeting to a much-desired body part. To use this technique, sit in front of a mirror, look yourself straight in the eyes and imagine yourself in an important meeting, in good shape, with a sun-kissed glow and a new body. Watch as the beauty slowly materialises.
2. Set specific goals: They should be something that you will achieve in a shorter time frame than you had expected, and they should be achievable but not too easy. If it’s achievable, that’s even better.
3. Keep your short-term goals and long-term goals in the same place: If you have a clear idea of what you’re going to achieve in the short term, you will know what to focus on right now. However, if you can’t predict exactly what will happen in the long term, your focus on the short-term is not as effective. The only way to achieve both is to keep your long-term and short-term goals in the same place, on a piece of paper or in your head.
4. Set milestones for yourself: Think of what you want to achieve and go from there. Make your short-term goals small and specific, so you can achieve them. If you want to lose a few kilos in a year, set a target of a quarter of your body weight lost per month. When you achieve the milestone, congratulate yourself and keep going. The next milestone will be even better.
5. Set SMART goals: This acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. Take your time, plan your goals well.
