Reflecting on Effective Teaching Strategies and Methods

After reviewing this lesson, the pre-service teachers in the group will probably take things personally—this is a great thing because it means they are thinking about ways to incorporate what they have learned! Use that momentum for this lesson extension.

Begin by having students think about a memorable lesson from their time in grade school. This can be something that was memorable because it was really great or because it did not go well.

With this lesson in mind, they will create a journal entry with two parts. For the first part of the journal entry, they should think about the lesson and how it compares with the strategies and methods discussed in this Study.com lesson. They should write about the parts of the lesson that matched the goals of effective teaching and the parts that need to be improved.

For the second part of the journal entry, they should describe how they would change going forward. Taking the lesson from the first part, ask them to write about a few things that they would change now that they are empowered with new information. As an alternative to the second part, give students a topic related to the area they will be teaching ask them to create an activity that uses the strategies and methods discussed.

As an optional component of this extension, students can share with the group.
