Here are some lesser-known strategies for overcoming procrastination

1. Get a pen. Seriously.
What is the number one reason people procrastinate on projects? It’s to get a deadline or an “impossible” deadline. What can you do? Schedule a meeting with yourself. You’ve been procrastinating on a project that you’ve set a deadline on. How are you going to complete it? Meeting with yourself at the appointed time, you’ll talk it through. You’ll assign a task to yourself. By giving yourself a task, you’ll actually complete it. For example: “Tomorrow at 1pm, I am going to read this article and then I am going to contact you.

2. Make your homework.
Have you ever wondered why people put things off until the last minute? It’s because they haven’t done the most important part of the work: they haven’t put in the work. For example: I have a day job and I have a lot of freelance writing to do, so I often end up writing what I call “rookie articles” because they’re easy and I can knock them off at the drop of a hat. If I put that off, I know that I won’t finish my assignments because they’re more difficult. By putting the time in on the main part of the assignment, it makes it so much easier.

3. Break your task down.
It’s like a chess match: you have to make a decision. Whether it’s reading a book or building a list of five things to do this week, you need to break down your task in small chunks. Then, you’re much more likely to finish the entire task because you feel you’ve accomplished something. You have to find that right balance: too small, and it takes forever; too big, and it takes forever.
